Signs of an amazing party

About two months before any Love of Friends party the team and LoF friends begin to put together the goody for that year.  2011 was hand-made desk calendars, 2010 was tote bags made from recycled tee-shirts that lots of friends dropped off to us, one year we made pins out of wooden hearts and magnets…and all of these years have a few things in common

* We drink a lot  of wine “to survive the night.”  The LoF team loves one another, that has to be the case to meet so often to put together a party with a budget of ne’r zero dollars.  But, sometimes things get a bit hectic, like last year when we had still over 30 bags to make just days before LoF4…luckily snowmageddon struck and that freed up some time.

* We enlist the help of a ton of friends to hang with us, drink wine, tea, seltzer and eat lots of snacks to help us put together the goody whatever that might be–this party is all about love, and making the day special for each person and ensuring NO ONE STRESSES OUT that it’s Vday, so of course we need to have the ideas and unique touches only our friends can provide to put together our items.  For our calendars this year, Maya and Ryder decorated the month of June with stamps from Japan, Alma’s mom was visiting from Mexico City and decorated May for us, and Verity decorated many pages of many months seeing her work go from detailed to more abstract and big as the hours slipped away.

* No matter what the craft is in which we put our minds to accomplishing so that our friends have something special to take home at the end of the night to remember LoF always, it hasn’t failed us yet that whoever’s home it happens to be that we set up shop to make our craft, the house always always always looks like this:

A dedication to Delilah…and Bill and Kim

To Bill from Kim Love of Friends 2011 Valentine's Day wallThis really sweet LoF Valentine’s Day wall message got me thinking about that radio show Delilah because this sweet sentiment made me want to dedicate this next song to Kim and Bill.  Though I love this song, I think it’s sweet and I hope that at some point in all of our lives we have someone who thinks of us in such a way, (see, Delilah, that’s what I’m saying) and even though it was released in, what, 1982, I believe this song has aged well and has great staying power,  I know that this song will never, ever, ever make it onto a Love of Friends soundtrack.

Let Them Eat Cake invite!

Kelsey and I are co-hosting The Midwife Center’s premiere fundraiser, Let Them Eat Cake! The Love of Friends team is very involved with this project, and we hope to see you there!

Kesley is on the committee and co-hosting this year, and volunteered last year.

Regina is on the committee and co-hosting this year. Last year Regina chaired the event, and the year before that, was the budding host by working closely with the event chair. Regina is also on the Midwife Center board and chairs the Fundraising committee.

Carrie is on the committee this year and volunteered last year.

Bethany is on the board of the Midwife Center and has moved from being the treasurer to the Board VP. Bethany also recruited Regina to join the board.

Jordan was the official photographer of last year’s event.

G’hdamn!

Okay, so, yes, this song is everything stereotypically heterosexual, and it’s overtly sexual.   It may cause people to ask  why do we continue to reinforce such ideas of male/female relationships?

Fine.  I get it.  I definitely do.  We can have lots of long conversations deconstructing traditional sex roles and why they fail in our current society.  In the meantime, we can relax, and enjoy an old fashioned stage performance that I think is very sexy.

No matter who you are, who you love, who you want to seduce and how you think you might go about seducing that person, and whether or not you like this kind of video, you can rest assured that this song will never make it onto a love of friend soundtrack.

Artist Bob Ziller helped with Kullu Valley Bike Project

One of the first artists to drop off a piece for the 5th Annual Love of Friends at SPACE GALLERY was Bob Ziller.  Bob mentioned that he hosted people at his house to create this wonderful piece that was on sale, as well as other prints.  After waiting for Kelsey and me to arrive (we were a tad late, and were shocked to see an artist standing outside SPACE Gallery at 9:10 am.) he told us about the piece, and then waved over his shoulder explaining he had more art stuff to do that day, an art opening, so he might not make it to the celebration–one of only a few good excuses.

I was listening to Burgh Living, a site I’d never heard of, but found from the new facebook page for Yinzpiration, and heard Bob’s name mentioned.  Though Bob says he didn’t take part in making the open community painting, I thought it would still be a good idea to highlight him since he’s an artist in our community doing really great things.

Listen to (and watch) a bit more of his story.

As you may also know, Planned Parenthood is under attack right now, fiscally and legislatively, in what is perhaps one of the most dangerous and intense assaults on reproductive rights in US history. For a little perspective, read what one of my professional heroines, historian Linda Gordon, has to say about it.

Most Romantic Song EVER

All right, I’m going to confess.  THIS SONG is amazing, beautiful, smart, sad, and timeless.  However, you probably won’t see this song in a Love of Friends soundtrack.  Sigh.

Too romantic for my blood.

Who knows what would have become of Jeff Buckley’s career?  Something tells me he would have remained a constant throughout the years.  We are now left with only a few of his songs, including this one that I love so  much.

This song smacks of romance.  This is the kind of song that makes people (those that are typically pursued) daydream…wishing something like this happens to them when they walk into a party…that the person you lock eyes with sends chills down your spine, and not in that, “shit, that guy looks like a creep, how can I avoid him now” kind of way.  If you were around in the prime of Jeff Buckley, this song  may have made you wish you were locking eyes with Jeff Buckley.

Perhaps it’s because of its unapologetic overly romantic sentiment, perhaps because this song was released in the 1990s…this song will probably never make it into a Love of Friends soundtrack.

We love you, too, Lily!

I’m not sure whom “Lily” is, but I appreciate her enthusiasm for the Valentine’s Day wall…especially as the evening went on…we can look back at the wall and see where it was tagged by Lily…

Note from Lily: roses are red

Tons of cute outfits at LoF5Truer words, Lily, truer words.

You know it. You know, you know, you know

This song may have made it into a Love of Friends soundtrack.  Unlike many of the songs I want to listen to all the time, the hay day of this song is still fairly recent, but somehow, just a bit too old to be immortalized on the LoF5 soundtrack.

What do I like about this song?  This song makes me want to shmon like MJ.  When the drums first start in this song, I want to jut out my lower lip and snap my fingers low next to my hips and…shmon.  In essence, this song makes me want to “look” like this:

SHMON

Note to self: learn how to shmon.
