LoF artist: Ryder Henry

I first met Ryder Henry canoeing…that might not have been the very first time, but it’s a pretty rad way to get to know someone.   I was so happy when Ryder decided to apply to be an artist for this year’s Love of Friends for many reasons.  One of those reasons being that Ryder single-handedly designed a tool for the LoF team to use to make our calendar production (this year’s handmade giveaway to the first 100 friends through the door) so much faster.  I literally almost cried in the face of genius.

Ryder is rad, and his artwork is amazing.  Take a look:

On 2.14.11 we’ll all have a chance to talk with Ryder.  His work will blow you away.

If you’re like me and you can’t wait until Monday to talk with Ryder and support his art, he also has an art opening occurring TONIGHT at Wild Card in Lawrenceville.   I highly recommend going.

Seeing Ryder’s opening has the makings for a great Perfect Hybrid Socialist First Date…bring a third friend and make it a threesome.  Our party is $25/person or $60/groups of 3.

Also, don’t forget to check out Ryder’s homepage to see more of his work.  I had no idea how prolific Ryder was, I just knew him to be a LoF Hero.

LoF5 Artist: Jennifer Gooch

Another day, another artist announced for the fifth annual Love of Friends.

I would like to introduce everyone to Jennifer Gooch.  I’ve never met Jennifer, but I’m excited to see her and her awesome art on 2.14.11.  Come say hi to Jennifer with me.

Here’s some info about Jennifer:

Jennifer Gooch is an artist, crafter, and musician from Texas.

Her art looks at how small things – text messages, key chains, notes, and lost gloves – become the stuff of existence, metaphors for relationships, guilt, rejection, vulnerability, and detachment.  Underneath a veneer of wry simplicity, her work seeks to reckon with absurdity.

When she’s not making stuff or working so that she can afford to make stuff, Jenn likes to ride around in her truck, Blanche, with her pup, Maybelle, looking for free stuff to fix up.

LoF5 artist: Kullu Valley Bike Project

I want to introduce everyone to another great artist for LoF5.  This artist is a bit different in that the “artist” is actually a project.  You may have heard about Kullu Valley Bike Project already, and if not, there is more info below.  KVBP is trying to raise awareness about their cause and is using LoF as a platform to talk to some cool kats about their idea.

They’re selling some awesome artwork to raise money,  so make sure to stop by and say hi to Bob Ziller.  Of his role with KVBP, he says, “I’m just an artist who had the idea for making the paintings and facilitating their creation at my studio, then selling them as a fundraising tool.”

The Kullu Valley Bike Project will be opening a bicycle repair and rental shop at the Kullu Valley Orphanage in Kullu, India.  The 16 children at the orphanage will learn bike repair skills and be able to rent out bikes for eco-tourism, popular in the area, which is at the foot of the Himalayas, bordering Nepal.

The artwork on display was created at local artist Bob Ziller’s studio, during a Penn Avenue First Friday Unblurred, at which he hosted an open community painting party, in which participants rode across 3 sheets of 30 ft. long archival watercolor paper, with the tires rolling out colorful acrylic paints. The fantastic results were recently exhibited at the Mendelson Gallery in Shadyside, one of Pittsburgh’s finest art galleries.

Proceeds from the sale of the artwork will benefit the Kullu Valley Bike Project. Besides the original artwork displayed,  24″ x 36″ archival prints are available for $100.

LoF5 Hula Hoop artist: Stefanie Moser

I am happy to announce Stefanie Moser as a Love of Friends artist for the 2011 celebration.  I have known Stef for a couple years now, and only the last year or so have I really had the chance to get to know her more.

You may have already seen Stef hula hoop at an event around the city, or even taken one of her hoop jam classes.  Pretty much Stef is awesome.  I still remember cornering her at Unwrapped, a fundraiser for the Union Project where Kelly Tobias, LoF Team member is serving as a Public Ally, and pretty much telling her she had to be an artist for LoF5.  Imagine my surprise when we received Stef’s application.

Here’s more about Stefanie!

Stefanie Moser is a [hula-]hooping enthusiast who began constructing her hoops in 2008. She started hooping in her room while talking on the phone and reading books, but upon taking her hoops to local parks, she quickly realized what greater joy could be had in hooping with others. As more and more folks discovered the dizzy delight plastic circles could stir, Stefanie somewhat unintentionally wound up spinning herself a little business.

Stefanie moved to Pittsburgh in 2007 after obtaining her BA in Studio Art from Messiah College and now co-leads the Steel City Hoop Union that she and Erika Johnson founded together in an effort to build a hooping community in Pittsburgh.  The group meets every Tuesday, rain or shine,  at the Union Project (801 N. Negley) from 6:30-7:30pm. All hips are welcome!

When Stefanie isn’t busy getting dizzy, she likes to unwind with baking, art-making, and her other favorite form of spinning: bicycle times!

Learn more about Stefanie’s new business, Spinster Hoops, and come hula hoop with Stef during Love of Friends.  You can even purchase your very own hoop!

LoF5 Artist: Carol Skinger

I would like to introduce everyone to Carol Skinger.  I’ve had the opportunity to connect with Carol via email–we’ve discussed at length our fear of aim, sometimes thwarted, to quickly master new technology (more, Carol has been my shoulder to cry on about such matters.)

I think you will all be very happy to see her wonderful greeting cards and other drawings at LoF5.  Make sure to say hi, pick up a few cards for yourselves, your loved ones…all the important people in your life–even those you’ve yet to meet.

Here is a note from Carol:

Drawing, painting and photography are and have been a constant practice before, during and after art school in the Bay Area and throughout my professional design career.  For over 20 years I practiced commercial and corporate interior design working in architectural firms in Vermont, Boston and Pittsburgh.  I still consult and offer second opinions on interior design, most recently a farmhouse in the Berkshires.

My art work walks the line from exploring ideas I am interested in with no thought to sales, to working out areas of expression with a definite mind toward sales.  Living in Pittsburgh since the early 1980’s, the subject of Pittsburgh has gotten into much of my work in every way imaginable.  I work primarily in watercolor, pastel, oil, and ink, and I also employ my altered digital photographs in creating art.  In addition to my original artwork, I have both prints and greeting cards available on my website.

LoF5 artist: Alanna James

The Love of Friends Team would like to introduce artist Alanna James.  Alanna has been a LoF artist for the past 3 years!  Her work is incredibly popular, and we are excited to have Alanna back for another year.  I’ve known Alanna for a few  years now and I have to say, hands down, Alanna is one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Here’s a  note from Alanna:

LoF5 Artists to be announced

The LoF Team strives to make the Love of Friends celebration special, interesting and unique.  This year, our emphasis is on our artists.  We have a great range of people who want to show off their great talents to all of you.

Over the next few days we will post information about the artists so that by the time LoF5 rolls around, you’ll feel like you know the artists, and we encourage you to sidle on over to them to chat about their work, and if the mood strikes, you might even want to ask one of them (or a few) to dance.

We have photography, graphic illustration, performance, and paintings among the many great works.

Interestingly, LoF has featured art in 4 out of the 5 years LoF has been rocking out, and to date, no one artist has shown work each year.  That means you really do get the best and the latest.

The artwork is for sale, so make sure to bring your checkbooks.  All the artists keep the money from their sales, and know that they appreciate your support.

So, keep an eye out on the blog for artist updates!
